Description:
8' 6" X 5' 6.5" Garden Panels Design Persain Bakhtiari rug. Hand-knotted and hand-woven in central west Iran.

A nomadic tribe in central Iran, Bakhtiari people have hand-woven their spectacular rugs for several centuries, and perhaps several thousand years. Thus, a long tradition of rug weaving continues the cultural and folkloric heritage of this unique tribe. Bakhtiari rugs are perhaps one of the finest, oldest, most famous and desirable of the Persian tribal rugs. Bakhtiari region is located near the city of Isfahan in Central Iran. Some of the Bakhtiaris immigrate back and forth between the warmer areas of South Iran and the cooler mountain air of North Central Iran, all the while taking their sheep herds with them through rough terrain and dangerous mountain passes. The wool from their sheep herds are cultivated for the weaving of their superb rugs. Oftentimes, a checkerboard field pattern of squares, representative of a Persian garden decorated with bird and animal images, typifies the Bahktiari design and motif, but in other instances geometric and floral patterns are also woven with great elegance and mastery. Their uniquely colorful designs expresses their love of nature and the natural beauty that enchants them in their daily life. Because of their superior quality wool and high degree of craftsmanship, antique Bakthiari rugs are highly collectible and proven to last for several generations--bound to become an heirloom.
